Winter Skills16-17 January 2016
Richard was leading the second of our two-day winter skills course in the Cairngorms. Here's his tale of the days....
I headed out into Coire Laogh Mor with Danni, Evan, Ellie, Barry, Leona and Paddy. We set of through deep snow after our planning session and equipment check. It was hard going but we made our way to a great location for footwork, crampon techniques, steep ground and self belay with an ice axe. On our way we met some of the Cairngorm Reindeer herd who followed us along the moraine and even up the hill towards our destination! It was a good day and we made it back to the cars as light faded.
The next day we headed out of Coire na Ciste car park to find a suitable slope to do some ice axe arrests and look at the snow pack. It was windier, but it does off about midday and we enjoyed a fantastic day with mountain hares and lots of sliding in the snow. After a visit to the ridge line to enjoy some views of the northern corries with some of the plateau visible we made our way down and back to a hot chocolate in the cafe for a wee debrief.
A good course with a fun group and loads of snow!
