Winter Skills14-15 January 2017
Our second winter skills event of the 2016/17 season. Richard Kermode was leading, here's tale of the days ...
After a stormy few days there was plenty of snow in the Cairngorms as I met up with May, Ben, Lorne and Mike in Aviemore for a winter skills course. It started with a good indoors session with a coffee or two before we headed out to Coire na Ciste for some fun in the snow! It was a fine day and we had to do some good trail breaking to reach a suitable location for some footwork, ice axe arrests and a whole lot of snow talk. We even had some views as the mist cleared a little and a lovely pink sky as darkness came. It was a great day and we covered a lot which would prove helpful when we saw the forecast for the second day…
An early start and we went into Coire an t-Sneachda in very wet thawing conditions with a lot of water and wet snow everywhere. On the way there were a lot of wet climbers heading home already and the quest for some ice to introduce crampons was looking decidedly unlikely. It was all quiet up by the moraines and we looked at the wet snow pack as well as a snow hole that had been recently dug before heading up higher to look for firmer snow. The weather got wetter as we went up and some good steeper ground footwork was necessary before we found some snow that would suffice though far from perfect. After covering some basics we decided to make for the ski centre and hot drinks.
It was a good weekend though it will take a while to dry out after sunday!
