Sgurr Mor on Beinn Alligin, 23 June 2003
Four
munros still to do, but was there enough time in a day to do them ? I wanted to compleat the 11th round before
half the year was up and the Aonach Eagach and Alligin munros still needed
ticked off. So Keith and I headed up to a buzy Glencoe where I was bundled out
of the van to run up over the Aonach Eagach ridge on my own. Superb conditions
with blue skies and a gentle breeze made for a fairly quick time of 2:50hr back
down to the road. Off to Torridon.
It was after 5pm when we left the car-park by the waterfall. Weather still
holding out well and the ground fairly dry by Torridon standards. As we walked
we were amazed by the sight of hundreds of bright spotted butterflies appearing
out of the heather.
Up
to the southerly munro peak of Tom na Gruagaich, we met and blethered with a
couple of folk. These were the only people we met on the hill today, everyone
else had long finished and were probably back at the Torridon Hotel
having a pint and in tucking into their tea.
Onto Sgurr Mor, past the huge gash in the hill, 100 metres or so below the
summit. This gap is an impressive sight, but in mist the path from Tom na
Gruagaich will take the unwary right to its edge with a scary drop below.
The summit reached and the 11th munro round compleat ! On top of the
world, yahoo ! The two of us had a great wee celebration. What a fantastic view today, conditions just perfect, vistas for
miles in all directions. We stayed for quite a while taking it all in.
We returned the way we came. "But what about the horns of Alligin ?" I hear you
cry. Well we'd had enough excitement for the day, besides they'd been walked
over many times before and will be again.
