  Cairngorms Challenge

Cairngorms Challenge - guided backpack

Days : 5  Max ratio : 1:6  Cost : £200  Dates : June 14-18

Spend 5 days with us on a guided backpacking high-level holiday in the Cairngorms

Day 1 : Cairngorm and Ben Macdui (13km distance, 950m ascent)
Day 2 : Beinn Mheadhoin and Derry Cairngorm (9km, 650m)
Day 3 : Carn a'Mhaim (11km, 550m)
Day 4 : Braeraich, Angel's Peak, Cairn Toul and The Devil's Point (18km, 1400m)
Day 5 : Monadh Mor and Beinn Bhrotain (22km, 1050m)

Vast high plateaux lie between Braemar and Aviemore on which we'll spend 5 days bagging 11 Munros. We'll back-pack into the area, camping at high levels by quiet and remote lochans and rivers. On wide plateaus and along narrow crests we'll discover dark corries and weird granite tors. The area also has a diverse wildlife and, if we're lucky, we'll come across a reindeer herd feeding on the artic-like tundra.

General outline of trip :

After arriving at the Cairngorm Ski Centre on the Thursday morning, we'll check our kit, go over the forecast and plan the 5 days on the hills.

Day one takes the form of a back-pack up to the Cairngorm Plateau, reaching the summits of Cairngorm itself and Ben Macdui, the second highest mountain in the UK. We'll spend the next two nights at Loch Etchachan - a wonderful remote loch, at over 3,000 feet above sea-level.

Our second day sees us leaving our heavy packs behind and we'll head up Beinn Mheadhoin with it's weird volcanic tors, then over to Derry Cairngorm before returning to Loch Etchachan.

On day 3 it's back on with the large packs to head over to Carn a'Mhaim. Part of this route is on a fairly narrow ridge and, as it is a detour, we can leave our packs behind for the ascent. We're staying the next two nights at Corrour Bothy below The Devil's Point.

No large back-packs for our 4th day, as we're doing a circuit from the bothy over Braeraich, Sgor an Lochain Uaine, Cairn Toul and The Devil's Point.

Our final day takes us over Monadh Mor and Beinn Bhrotain to walk out to the Linn of Dee, where transport awaits for our return.

The package includes guide for 5 days and pick up and return from Edinburgh, Perth or Aviemore. You will need some back-packing kit including a sleeping bag and stove - we can help with some of this gear. A list of suggested gear is here. Cost for each person is £200 and the maximum guide to client ratio is 1:6. Our next date is 14-18 June 2012.
