An Riabhachan stretches west to east between An Socach and Sgùrr na Lapaich, its grassy crest broken by three distinct tops, each crowned with a cairn, with the central one being the highest. The mountain’s north-eastern side is far more rugged, with crags rising steeply above Coire Gnada and its two small lochans. Remote and imposing, it forms one of the great ridges of the Mullardoch Munros, with extensive views across Loch Mullardoch and over to the Monar peaks

Due to its remote setting above Loch Mullardoch, most walkers climb An Riabhachan as part of the full northern Mullardoch circuit, a demanding traverse that also takes in Càrn nan Gobhar, Sgùrr na Lapaich and An Socach. The route is best done west-to-east, starting with the Loch Mullardoch ferry to the far western end of the loch, then following the crest eastwards over the Munros and returning to the dam. Tackled this way, the traverse avoids a long, weary trudge if attempted in the opposite direction, making for a more rewarding and logical outing.
