In the Southern Highlands, a fairly straightforward hike up Beinn Challuim from a section of the West Highland Way near Tyndrum follows a worn, often muddy path and a line of old fence-posts up the southern shoulder to its two summits, around 500m apart.
The route can be extended into a longer circular outing by including the nearby Corbetts of Cam Chreag and Beinn Chaorach.

Route description
1. Getting to Tyndrum and Auchtertyre

Above Auchtertye looking up to Beinn Odhar
On the A82/A85, around 2km south-east of Tyndrum, a turning off the main road is signposted for Strathfillan Wigwams, following a section of the West Highland Way. Follow this road for around 400m towards Auchtertyre Farm, where parking is available by farm buildings, signed as a walker’s car park.
Alternatively, parking is possible in a layby around 1km further south-east along the main road. From here, cross the road to join another section of the West Highland Way and head towards Kirkton Farm. From the farm, the hill can be tackled directly by crossing the railway, or the West Highland Way can be followed to Auchtertyre Farm.

2. Beinn Challuim

On Beinn Challuim's southern slopes with southern top ahead and main summit behind
From the buildings below Auchtertyre Farm, the road is followed on foot, crossing a bridge over the Allt Auchtertyre
. Immediately beyond, a left turn leads past farm buildings and up towards the wooden wigwams.
Beyond the wigwams, and on a marked footpath, the route passes through some woodland and under the railway
, before turning uphill through bracken and grass. An ATV track can be picked up here, though it is muddy in places, and leads uphill before fading into a more defined but boggy path.
The path is quite obvious for the most part and soon meets a wooden fence line
, which is followed as it winds over undulating ground onto Beinn Challuim's south-east shoulder. Underfoot conditions improve higher up, becoming drier and occasionally gravelly as the south top is approached.
On the southern top
, the crest splits, and the path, now very distinct, drops and traverses along the west side of the crest. This avoids steeper ground ahead on the crest itself.
A gentle dip between Beinn Challuim's tops is crossed, followed by a final climb of around 70m on a clear path to reach the large cairn
marking the mountain's summit.

3. Return and alternative over Cam Chreag and Beinn Chaorach

Pausing on the way down, view to Ben Lui
The simplest return is to retrace the ascent route.
A longer alternative is to continue down Beinn Challuim's north-west shoulder, then over the Corbetts of Cam Chreag
and Beinn Chaorach
. This forms a circuit ending by descending on fine estate tracks
west of the Allt Auchtertyre.
I did this on an outing back in the 90’s, but alas only a few photos were taken and little in the way of notes kept !
