Beinn Chaorach is a mainly grassy hill whose longest slopes rise northwards from Strath Fillan. Set between the higher summits of Beinn Challuim and Beinn Odhar, the hill is connected by a broad grassy ridge to its north-east neighbour, Cam Chreag. Although lower than the surrounding peaks, Beinn Chaorach is the only one of the group to have a trig point standing on its summit.
The hill is unlikely to be climbed on its own and instead is more naturally combined with neighbouring peaks. Beinn Chaorach is one of five Corbetts north-east of Tyndrum that can be linked in a fine circuit from Glen Coralan. It also forms part of a smaller circuit taking in the higher peaks of Cam Chreag and Beinn Challuim from Auchtertyre in Strath Fillan.
