Beinn Lair is a striking Corbett in the Letterewe Forest, dramatically different when seen from opposite sides. From Loch Maree it appears as a long, broad and grassy hill rising gently above the wooded shoreline, but its hidden face reveals a far bolder character: an immense 5-kilometre escarpment of cliffs plunging down into Gleann Tulacha and Lochan Fada. This contrast makes Beinn Lair one of the most memorable Corbetts in the northwest Highlands, offering a sense of vast scale and solitude, with superb views over Fisherfield’s wild interior and the length of Loch Maree.

With sheer cliffs to the north and Loch Maree hemming its southern flanks, access to Beinn Lair is restricted to a few approaches. The shortest option is from Poolewe, where estate tracks lead into the hills before faint paths ascend onto the grassy plateau above the cliffs. Longer alternatives begin from Fisherfield, threading through wild glens before curving round to gain the summit. Whichever route is chosen, reaching Beinn Lair demands effort but rewards with magnificent scenery.
