Located in the Manor Hills of the Southern Uplands, Black Law stands between Manor Water to the west and the forested slopes around the upper reaches of Douglas Burn to the east. This is a broad, rolling hill, characteristic of the region, with slopes of grass and heather and a long crest that connects Black Cleuch Hill to the north-east with Deer Law to the south-west.
The summit itself is modestly marked by a small cairn positioned just beside a fence-line - a typical navigational aid in this landscape. While lacking dramatic features, Black Law offers a remote and atmospheric upland experience, with wide views and a sense of solitude.
Due to its setting among a cluster of similarly rounded hills - including Greenside Law and Dollar Law - Black Law is usually climbed as part of a route taking in several summits. The most practical approach begins from near the end of the public road in Manor Valley, from where a satisfying loop can be made, tracing high crests above the valley and linking several summits along the way.
