In the south-west of Scotland, Cairnsmore of Carsphairn is the highest hill on a series of grass-covered broad shoulders in a fairly quiet area close to the Southern Upland Way.
The easiest route up Cairnsmore of Carsphairn follows an estate track from the Green Well of Scotland to within 2km of the summit, where a wall leads uphill.
A finer and longer hike begins by the Water of Ken and continues further north-west from Cairnsmore of Carsphairn over minor summits.
