Càrn a’ Chaochain lies south-west of Cannich and Tomich, its summit rising above the extensive forests of Affric. The hill forms a broad ridge with three tops over 700m that partly encircle a small lochan set beneath their slopes. The middle top carries a trig point and gives fine views across Glen Affric, though it is not the summit; the highest point lies on the south top.
The most straightforward route up Càrn a’ Chaochain begins at Plodda Falls near Tomich, where estate tracks head through forestry and past the pony-treking centre at Cougie to reach the foot of the hill. A stalker’s path then climbs onto open moorland, leading to the heather-clad and broad upper slopes to the hill’s crest with wide views over Affric.
