The long, undulating ridge of the Hills of Cromdale overlooks Speyside to the west and Strath Avon to the east. Near the northern end of the range, Carn a' Ghille Chearr is the second highest summit on the broad ridge. On clear days, the summit offers an uninterupted view of Ben Rinnes and out to the North Sea.
The shortest route to Carn a' Ghille Chearr begins in Strath Avon and follows an old decent stalker's much of the way. Once up onto the broad ridge of the Hills of Cromdale, navigation is quite straightforward following a fence-line for the most part to Creagan a' Chaise, the other significant summit in the range.
