Càrn Bàn

Càrn Bàn is a vast, flat-topped and very remote hill in the Northern Highlands, lying a considerable distance from any public road. Set deep within the Freevater wilderness, it feels notably isolated, with long approaches required from all directions.

The lower slopes are largely heather-clad, above which the hill broadens into a wide, grass-covered plateau that gives Càrn Bàn its expansive, open character and strong sense of remoteness.

Given its isolation, several approach options exist when studying the map. A common choice is a cycle along estate roads from Black Bridge near Aultguish Inn, passing through Strath Vaich. An alternative approach from Alladale Estate similarly makes use of estate roads and tracks. Both of these approaches reach the hill from the south, often using sections of old stalkers’ paths to gain height. A more committing option is an approach from the Bridge of Oykel, allowing Càrn Bàn to be combined with Seana Bhraigh in a long, high-level circular route.
