The high ground between Strathconon and Glen Orrin rises over a series of crests and minor tops, some marked by crags and small lochans. Four summits exceed 670m, and for years Càrn na Còinnich was considered a twin of Meall nan Damh, both given a height of 673m. A more accurate survey in 2014 revised Meall nan Damh down to just above 670m — around 3m lower than Càrn na Còinnich. While the OS Landranger map reflects this (671m), the Explorer sheet still shows the old 673m figure. With less than 150m of drop separating it from its neighbours, only Càrn na Còinnich qualifies for Graham (or Fiona) status.
The most straightforward approaches begin from Strathconon, where estate tracks merge and climb up the hill's slopes. Higher up the ground is largely pathless, though faint ATV traces can be followed towards Càrn na Còinnich's summit.
