Càrn nan Gobhar is the most easterly of the four Munros strung along the northern side of Loch Mullardoch. Its broad slopes, clothed mainly in heather and coarse grass, give the mountain a less rocky character than its neighbours, but its summit still commands rewarding views across the loch and over Glen Cannich. Rising in a chain with Sgùrr na Lapaich, An Riabhachan and An Socach, it often serves as the natural first or last top when tackling the northern Mullardoch Munros.
The usual ascent begins at Loch Mullardoch Dam, where a hydro track leads into the glen before a climb over steep heather and rough grass gains the col between Càrn nan Gobhar and its minor outlier, Creag Dubh. From here the final slopes rise more gently to the summit cairn. Most walkers will combine the hill with the other three Munros along the ridge in a long but memorable outing.
