Visible from both the A9 and the Perth-Inverness train line, Creag Dhubh is a striking, rugged hill overlooking the village of Newtonmore. It commands a fine position above Glen Banchor and Strathspey, with a long ridge running from north-east to south-west. Thanks to its relatively isolated setting, the summit offers excellent panoramic views in all directions.
The easiest and most popular route begins in Newtonmore, climbing through woodland before following the hill's crest to the summit. For a longer outing, a full traverse from Newtonmore to Loch Uvie is possible if return transport can be arranged. The annual Creag Dhubh hill race follows much of the route from Newtonmore, but turns back after reaching the minor summit at the north-eastern end of the hill's crest.
