There are 4 Munro peaks west of Drumochter Pass, Sgairneach Mhor is the second highest and the only one to have a trig point marking its summit.
Sgairneach Mhor's topography is slightly complex with several spurs, a falt expansive summit crest and a northern coire which often holds a cornice in winter.
Linked to Beinn Udlamain via a bealach at above 800m, it makes sense to climb Sgairneach Mhor in a day Munro-bagging with Geal-charn, A'Mharconaich, Beinn Udlamain. Adding in the nearby Corbett, The Sow of Atholl is an easy detour with 150m additional ascent.
Terrain is fairly easy underfoot, with a fair amount of the route following tracks, paths and fence-posts. The Munros in this group all have different characters and afford good views over Loch Ericht to the Ben Alder range and beyond.
