Guarding the eastern approaches to the Rough Bounds of Knoydart, Garbh Chìoch Mhòr is a rugged mountain with a ridge crest stretching from Sgùrr na Cìche to Sgùrr nan Coireachan.

Most likely to be bagged on route from Sgùrr na Cìche to Sgùrr nan Coireachan, route possibilities to Garbh Chìoch Mhòr and its neighbouring Munros are numerous. Once on the mountain's undulating crest, navigation is made straightforward over its entire length by following an old wall with occasional iron posts.

Probably the most popular is from Glen Dessarry, where a forest track gets close to Garbh Chìoch Mhòr. There is a bit of scrambling involved while heading up a gully to reach the bealach north-west of Garbh Chìoch Mhòr from where most hillwalkers will opt for a ridge traverse from Sgùrr na Cìche to Sgùrr nan Coireachan.
