Meall a’ Chaorainn is a remote, compact hill in Easter Ross, forming a prominent heather-clad rise above the pass that separates Gleann Mòr from Strath Vaich. Despite its modest height, it stands out clearly when viewed from these glens.

The summit is a flat, open top, marked by a small pile of stones just south of a tiny lochan. Views are pleasant rather than expansive, as higher hills enclose Meall a’ Chaorainn on most sides, though Beinn Dearg provides a striking focal point and there are pleasing views down Strath Vaich.

The simplest approach is from the Gleann Mòr–Strath Vaich pass itself. This can be reached either from Black Bridge near Aultguish via Strath Vaich, or from Alladale Lodge through Gleann Mòr, with both approaches making use of good estate tracks. From the pass, the ascent is made directly up very steep, heather-clad slopes which, while demanding, are generally secure underfoot.
