Meall Onfhaidh rises between the glens of Gleann Fionnlighe and Gleann Suileag, both of which carry rights-of-way into the surrounding hills. It sits in a quiet position north of Loch Eil, overlooked by the bulk of Gulvain to the north and Meall a' Phùbuill to the north-east.
The hill is largely grassy in character, though its north-western face drops steeply into Gleann Fionnlighe, while the upper part of the south-eastern slopes fall sharply towards Gleann Suileag. Elsewhere, the terrain is broad, rounded and uncomplicated, giving the hill the appearance of a wide grassy dome.
Two cairns stand around 100m apart on Meall Onfhaidh's spacious and undulating summit plateau - the north-east cairn is marked as the highest point on the map, though the larger cairn to the south-west may appear the more obvious summit.
The most direct approach begins near the shores of Loch Eil, where forestry tracks are followed to the end of the road network. From there, steep but straightforward grassy slopes lead to the broad summit crest.
Meall Onfhaidh can be combined with neighbouring Aodann Chlèireig, forming a circuit over wide crests with expansive views. The outing can also be extended to include Meall a’ Phùbuill to the north-east for a longer day.
