Morven, Caithness

Morven is the highest point in Caithness, a shapely and unmistakable cone that rises above the upper reaches of the strath surrounding the Berriedale Water. Its slopes are cloaked in deep heather and loose boulder scree, easing onto a broad grassy plateau near the top that softens the mountain’s steep and rugged lower appearance.

Morven’s distinctive shape and prominent position by the Flow Country make it identifiable from afar — even as far as the Moray Coast or the Cairngorms on a clear day.

Two fine approaches lead to Morven’s slopes. From Braemore Lodge to the east, a track suitable for cycling follows the glen alongside the Berriedale Water, passing close beneath Maiden Pap - a smaller, craggier counterpart and an excellent detour for those with time and energy to spare.

The alternative approach comes from Berriedale, following the Langwell Water on a good estate track through wild, empty country to the base of Morven’s south-east flank.

Both routes meet open ground for the final ascent over heather and stone to the high plateau and summit cairn. Both routes can be extended with a hike over nearby Scaraben.
