Ruadh Stac Mòr sits in the heart of the Fisherfield and Letterewe wilderness, a remote Munro whose name — “big red stack” — reflects the russet sandstone boulders that crown its summit. Its rocky buttresses loom above Fuar Loch Mòr, while gentler grassy slopes merge with neighbouring A’ Mhaighdean’s flanks to fall towards Gleann na Muice.
Climbing Ruadh Stac Mòr requires commitment and long approaches. The mountain is often paired with A’ Mhaighdean, with common entry points being from Kinlochewe to the south, Poolewe to the northwest, or Corrie Hallie to the northeast. All involve hours of rough or boggy track walking before the hill is even reached. Many hillwalkers plan a two-day trip, using wild camps or bothies, and often combine the ascent with other Fisherfield Munros as part of the legendary “Big 6” circuit.
