Sgùrr a' Mhaoraich stands in a rather isolated position between Loch Cuaich (prev Loch Quoich) to the south, Loch Hourn to the west and the South Glen Shiel Ridge to the north. The mountain's southern face rises from the roadside up grass-covered shoulders, which contrast with craggy and steep north and westerly faces.

Most hillwalkers will opt to approach Sgùrr a' Mhaoraich from the south, from where a fairly direct and short route initially follows a hydro track, then climbs up onto undulating ground of the mountain's southern shoulder.

A slightly longer route begins around 1km south-west of the bridge on Loch Cuaich and traces a rather soggy stalkers path up onto Sgùrr Coire nan Eiricheallach and approaches Sgùrr a' Mhaoraich via its eastern crest.

From the summit, minor summits can be reached by short detours or lead to an alternative descent rather than a direct return.
