The Buck, also known as The Buck of Cabrach, is a distinctive hill rising above vast moorlands northeast of the Cairngorms. Smaller but similar in shape to Ben Rinnes, its heather-clad slopes lead to a summit crowned by a shattered rocky tor. A trig point at the top offers sweeping views over moorland and farmland to the Cairngorms to the southwest and the sea to the north and east.
The most practical route starts from a narrow road to the north of the hill, where a faint path follows the remnants of an old fence line directly to The Buck's summit. The route can be extended over minor summits and estate tracks, passing unusual granite markers and the haunting ruins of old farm buildings on the return.
