Rising above the southern end of Loch Muick, Broad Cairn's boulder covered summit sits above undulating grassy plains. Being surrounded by other Munro peaks, most people will hike over Broad Cairn on a route taking in more Munros.

Encircling Loch Muick there are five Munro peaks, including Broad Cairn. Taken together, these can hiked in an excellent circular route of Munro-bagging. Beware if doing this route anti-clockwise, the initial descent off Broad Cairn is through boulderfield which will test tired legs.

A fine alternative is to approach from the fine estate track heading in from Auchallater, a few miles south of Braemar. This route takes in Càrn an t-Sagairt Mòr and Cairn Bannoch and can be extended to a circular route bagging the peaks around Glen Callater, most of which is following faint paths on grass covered ground.
