Geallaig Hill rises above Deeside as a broad, heather-clad summit overlooking the winding River Gairn. Its slopes bear the marks of the managed eastern Highlands, with muirburn, lines of grouse butts and estate tracks crossing the undulating ground.

This short route begins from the roadside near Braenoloin Farm, just north of the hill. An estate track climbs steadily for around 3km through heather to the summit plateau.

Though somewhat uneventful underfoot, the height gained rewards with wide views across Deeside and the surrounding hills.

Route description

1. Getting to Braenaloin

Parking by Braenaloin

Parking by Braenaloin

The A939 runs from Ballater to Grantown-on-Spey, crossing the River Gairn along the way. Just west of this crossing, the narrow B976 branches off and briefly follows the river upstream before climbing uphill. Here you'll find the small cottage of Braenaloin Farm.

Opposite the cottage is a rough parking area with space for a few vehicles. The walk begins nearby on an estate track.

2. Geallaig Hill

Heading up the track

Heading up the track

From the parking area, head a few metres downhill to a gate leading onto a track that climbs steadily over open hillside. Although rough in a few places, the track is generally in good condition as it winds gently up the heather-covered slopes.

After about 2 km, the track meets a fenceline - follow both southwards as the gradient eases onto the summit crest.

At a track junction , bear southeast and continue for roughly 250 metres to reach the summit of Geallaig Hill , marked by a trig point encircled by a low sheltering wall of stones and boulders.

Thanks to the hill's relatively isolated position, the views are superb - sweeping down Deeside toward Braemar, across to Lochnagar, and back over Morven, Brown Cow Hill, and the high ground around Ben Avon.

3. Return

Returning on the track, Brown Cow Hill ahead

Returning on the track, Brown Cow Hill ahead

Retrace your steps to return. The descent offers better views than the ascent, particularly ahead over Brown Cow Hill.

If transport can be arranged, the walk can be extended via one of the tracks crossing the hill, some of which return to the roadside a considerable distance from the start.
