Meall Tairneachan is the highest point on a series of undulating hills rising between Loch Tummel and Strath Tay. Its broad, grass-covered slopes are interrupted by an active barytes mine that lies just below the summit plateau. Though modest in character compared with nearby Munros, the hill gives fine views over Highland Perthshire and is often combined with neighbouring Farragon Hill in a longer outing.
The simplest ascent starts from the western end of Loch Tummel, where an estate track climbs steadily towards the north-west side of the hill. The summit lies just off the track and is reached by a short detour, following a faint worn path across easy ground. Beyond, the track passes the working barytes mine, and from here the outing can be extended with a pathless but rewarding traverse to neighbouring Farragon Hill. Meall Tairneachan can also be approached from Fenich Wood above the southern shores of Loch Tummel, giving a quieter line onto the open ridge.
