Route description

1. Getting to Moy

Entrance to the Moy Wind Farm

Entrance to the Moy Wind Farm

The route begins at the access road to Moy Wind Farm, located off the B9154, a few miles south of Inverness.

A locked gate blocks vehicle access, but there is space for around four cars to park just before it, to the side of the access road.

To reach the B9154, take the A9, either from Daviot to the northwest or from Moy to the southeast. The A9 is currently undergoing upgrades to a dual carriageway in this area, so access points may change in the future.

From the parking area, ideally by bike, follow the wind farm access road towards Moy Mains. The route passes through an avenue of trees and open fields with grazing sheep, then skirts the edge of a forest before reaching a gate and cattle grid beneath a communications mast.

Cross the cattle grid and note the wind farm map by the junction - locate turbine T205 on it, as it will serve as a key reference along the way. Take the right fork and begin a short but steep climb. The track soon levels out near the first wind turbine, with the slopes of Carn nan Tri-tighearnan coming into view.

Continue past more turbines until the road descends to a bridge over Moy Burn. Just beyond, on the opposite bank, sits a small stalkers' bothy sheltered below the slopes of Carn Monadh nan da Allt.

Keep following the wind farm road until you reach a junction with T205 marked to the left. Take the right fork, descending to a bridge over the Allt na Beinne.

Immediately before the bridge, turn left onto a rough stalkers' track aiming north. This track fords a couple of small burns before reaching another junction just beyond the last of the wind turbines. Stay right, following the track as it climbs steadily uphill. Eventually, the track ends by a turning circle - this is the best spot to leave your bike.

From the end of the track, there's no defined path to follow. Head east through deep heather, aiming for the grassy basin of the Allt na Beinne. Following the burn upstream provides easier terrain than trudging through the heather either side !

Around 1km on from leaving the track end, a fence line is met - follow this eastwards trudging up over stunted heather and peat-hags for just under 1km to reach the summit of Carn nan Tri-tighearnan .
