Assynt is a mountainous area in Sutherland in the north-west of Scotland. The highest mountains in this sparsely populated area are Ben More Assnyt and its linked neighbour Conival, which are part of a chain of high-level peaks topped with quartzite blocks.
Most people will approach Ben More Assynt from Inchnadamph to the west following the line of the River Traligill through Gleann Dubh. This is a fine route taking in Conival and also giving the option to extend by traversing Ben More Assynt's southern ridge, including its 'bad step', and the nearby Corbett of Breabag.
A quieter approach, for which the use of a bike is recommended, is to head in from Glen Cassley to the east.
