Route description

1. Getting to Glen Brerachan

By the top of Glen Brerachan

By the top of Glen Brerachan

The A924 climbs steadily from Pitlochry into Glen Brerachan, continuing through Strathardle towards Bridge of Cally, just north of Blairgowrie.

Near the highest point of the road, a mast stands beside some forestry, where tracks lead off on both sides of the road.

The walk begins from the eastern side, where parking is available for a few vehicles by a gate that blocks vehicle access up a gravel track.

From the parking area, the track rises gently uphill beyond the gate. The mast shown on OS maps is no longer in place, and soon the route becomes more of a grassy trail - fainter in sections and often soft underfoot. As the track reaches the heather, it narrows further, with a single worn line splitting the thick vegetation.

The path swings south at the remains of an old gate and begins to climb more steadily, winding its way above Dalnacarn Craig. After reaching a broad, flat moorland area, it gradually bends toward Blath Bhalg, joining the line of a dilapidated fence . Following this fence, the trail ascends to the hill's western top .

A brief dip follows, with an unexpected little scramble, then a rise to Blath Bhalg's middle summit. Following the fence as it turns south-east , a short jog leads to the main top of Blath Bhalg , marked by a low cairn with a rusting metal post sticking from its centre.

For such a short hike and relatively low summit, the views are surprisingly expansive - Schiehallion to the west, Ben Vrackie, Beinn a' Ghlo and Beinn Vuirich close by, and Ben Macdui and the Angus Hills visible to the north and east.

The return is made by retracing the outward route.

A looped descent down the grassy track to Dalnacarn was considered, but the thought of nearly 2km returning along the narrow A924 shared with campervans proved a deterrent on my outing !
