Creag a' Mhadaidh rises in an isolated position above the western end of Loch Errochty, its broad and gently undulating slopes giving relatively straightforward access. Despite its ease, the hill feels remote, set well back from main routes, with little in the way of distinct features on its upper ground.
From its modest summit, views are extensive but partly screened - Beinn Mholach dominates to the west, while Beinn a' Chuallaich obscures part of the south-east horizon. More expansive outlooks open to the south-west towards Glen Etive and the mountains of Glen Coe.
Creag a' Mhadaidh can be approached from several directions, with all options following a track of some sort to reach the base of the hill.
From Trinafour, tracks run along either the northern or southern shore of Loch Errochty, both suitable for biking, though the southern one reaches further and leaves less distance on foot.
Access can also be gained via the col with Gualann Sheileach, reached from Dalnaspidal on the A9 or from Loch Rannoch.
