Standing on the southern fringes of the Fisherfield wilderness, Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair is a rugged mountain and the highest Munro in the area. Predominantly built of sandstone, it is topped with a layer of white and grey quartzite blocks. Three spurs radiate from Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair's summit: the northern spur links to the nearby Sgurr Ban, the southern spur extends to a minor peak of Meall Garbh and onwards to Beinn Tarsuinn, and the eastern spur leads to a ridge connecting to the 'Munro Top' of Sgurr Dubh - some easy rock-scrambling is enjoyed on the way to this little summit.

As with all of the Munro peaks in Fisherfield, the most straightforward approach to Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair begins at Corrie Hallie by Dundonnell, from where a rough track heads into the wilderness. The use of a bike can be made on this track to reach the dilapidated building at Achnegie, north-east of Sgurr Ban.

Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair can be combined with an ascent of Sgurr Ban heading in from Loch a' Bhraoin to the east. Ideally this would need dry conditions so as to tackle Sgurr Ban's white quartzite slabs above Loch an Nid.

If hiking Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair on a route with Beinn Tarsuinn, an approach can be made along the track from Kinlochewe to the south, but worth noting that this route heads around the northern shore of Lochan Fada which is pathless and hard going and not worth extending the route onwards to A' Mhaighdean from this direction.

Fisherfield Big 6

The 5 Munros in Fisherfield, along with the Corbett Beinn a'Chlaidheimh (which used to be a Munro), are affectionately known as the 'Fisherfield Big 6'. Although most hikers backpack in and bag the peaks over two or three days, it is quite feasable to bag them in a day, particularly with the help of a bike on the track in.
