Am Bàsteir is a prominent peak in the northern Black Cuillin of Skye, forming part of a distinctive serrated skyline south of Sligachan alongside Sgùrr nan Gillean and Sgùrr a' Bhàsteir. Its western end is guarded by the spectacular Basteir Tooth, a striking pinnacle that adds to its dramatic profile.
From Sligachan, an ascent of Am Bàsteir is fairly straightforward but does require skillful scrambling and a good head for heights, as some ledges are exposed and airy and some people might prefer the security of a rope on its 'bad step'. The gabbro rock provides excellent grip, but certain sections can be loose or polished, becoming slippery when wet.
Bagging Am Bàsteir can be done on its own, or as part of a traverse along the ridges connecting to Sgùrr nan Gillean and Bruach na Frithe. However most hillwalkers will likely retrace their steps along its crest to avoid the Basteir Tooth !
