Standing at the northern end of Skye's Black Cuillin, Sgurr nan Gillean is a stunning mountain, its profile sweeping up from the floor of Glen Sligachan to rise in a series of buttresses. Along with Am Basteir and Sgurr a' Bhasteir, it forms the serrated skyline dominating the view south of Sligachan.
The summit of Sgurr nan Gillean stands on the intersection of three ridges - West Ridge, Pinnacle Ridge and the South-East Ridge. The easiest of these is the South-East Ridge, also known as the 'tourist route', but even this is graded as a Grade 3 rock scramble. Ropework is essential for abseiling on the West Ridge or Pinnacle Ridge.

The peaks of Sgurr nan Gillean, Am Basteir and Bruach na Frithe form a chain at the northern end of the Black Cuillin. When viewed Sligachan they are an impressive sight, though Bruach na Frithe is hidden from view behind the subsidary peak of Sgurr a' Bhasteir. Peaks : 3 Munros
