In Dumfries and Galloway and north-east of Moffat, the impressive Grey Mare's Tail flows down into Moffat Dale. Above this waterfall and Loch Skeen which feeds it, White Coomb rises in a series of 'Rough Craigs'.

The most direct route to White Coomb begins from the NTS car-park below the Grey Mare's Tail using a well-constructed path to the base of the hill and following an old wall thereafter.

White Coomb can also be approached from Talla reservoir or the Megget Stone to the north using estate tracks and following fence-lines.

Both of these routes can be extended to include Hart Fell, which is around 6km to the west of White Coomb.
